Atwood‘s Machine
Experimental configuration for demonstrating Newton's 2nd law, as well as determining acceleration due to gravity (g) and the moment of inertia of a segment disc.Atwood's machine consists of an aluminum tripod intended for attachment to a wall. It is equipped at the top with a large, ball-bearing segment disc serving as a roller for a cord with two holders for slotted weights. The segment disc can be easily demounted for the purpose of measuring its moment of inertia. Pulling a cord triggers a mechanism which sets the masses in motion. Atwood's machine also comes with a movable weight platform for stopping the masses.
