Student experiment to visibly demonstrate osmosis and simulate an elementary process in our cells.
The two sides of a U-tube are separated by a semi-permeable membrane. One side is filled with pure water and the other is filled with a concentrated sugar solution. After a length of time the liquid level on one side rises higher than the other because water can pass through the membrane into the solution with the higher concentration of sugar in order to make the concentrations even out. For comparison purposes, concentrated solutions of other substances can also be used. The volume of water which has passed through the membrane can be read off from a glass capillary tube.
